Why don’t more porn sites have apps?
There’s an app for everything these days – a company that doesn’t have an app is more surprising than one that does! One industry that has nearly completely avoided the app craze, though, is the adult industry. While some cam sites have apps for performers to facilitate mobile broadcasting, and interactive sex toys have apps to connect them to cam sites, there are very few adult sites that have apps available for either iPhone or Android devices. Why don’t porn sites have apps?
Google and Apple’s Prudish Policies
Most people download apps from 1 of 2 places: Apple’s App Store or the Google Play Store. Both app marketplaces have policies in place that explicitly ban apps that are sexual in nature, which rules out most clip, fan club, and cam sites from creating apps that could be easily downloaded. Apps that need to be directly downloaded have lower usage rates than apps from the 2 marketplaces, and do not come with automatic update options and other support features.
Customers Need To Be Discreet
While some porn site viewers may be single or up front with their partner about their porn viewing habits, many are not. Hiding a visit to a website is easy: just clear your browsing history, and most snoopers will be none the wiser. An app, however, is harder to hide. Sure, you can remove the shortcut from your home screen, but a few taps would easily expose such a move. With online porn’s well-known link to piracy and illegal file-sharing, as well, many customers are understandably suspicious about their movements being tracked on porn sites and are reluctant to download anything related to adult content.
Apps Cost Money
At the end of the day, though, it’s all about money. Apps are expensive to build, support, and maintain, and porn sites are notoriously stingy when it comes to site updates and new features. Many sites only recently optimized their designs for mobile, so it’s not surprising that they’re not willing to splash out on apps that already face 2 major obstacles to widespread adoption.
