Non-fungible Token (NFT) in the Adult Industry

Non-fungible tokens have made their entrance into the adult industry

Most of us know by now that NFT stands for non-fungible token…but that doesn’t really give a very clear description of what they are!

Wikipedia’s definition: “A non-fungible token (NFT) is a unit of data stored on a digital ledger, called a blockchain, that certifies a digital asset to be unique and therefore not interchangeable.  NFTs can be used to represent items such as photos, videos, audio, and other types of digital files. Access to any copy of the original file, however, is not restricted to the buyer of the NFT. While copies of these digital items are available for anyone to obtain, NFTs are tracked on blockchains to provide the owner with a proof of ownership that is separate from copyright.”

Bonni’s simplified definition : NFT’s are basically numbered “digital prints” (usually pics or clips) that exist in the mysterious world of “crypto-land”. When you “mint” (create) an NFT (a company usually does this for you) you still retain rights to the original image. You can sell multiple runs and you can sell it on other platforms (though creating exclusive NFT’s can be a benefit because buyers feel they are getting something rare).

There are plenty of places you can read about NFT’s and how they are sold, created and traded. That being said: I am living proof you don’t need to know much about NFT’s to make money off of them!

The question I hear most often is: why would people pay so much money for what is essentially a digital print?

The answer is simple. To the buyer the payment is not seen as a disadvantage. They see something that they want and they buy it. They are like baseball cards. Collector items with hypothetical value. It’s fun! In the world of XXX NFT’s you don’t have to be famous for your “card” to hold value… you just have to be creative and put yourself out there!

The NFT trend may have passed it’s initial spike… but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a TON of potential in NFT’s! They are still the perfect way to discreetly send and pay for porn, and a few of the XXX platforms are trying to develop that idea. Some companies are aiming to move towards selling clips as NFT’s. Their market places will be like our regular clip hosting sites but these clips are on the blockchain and payments are in crypto- so the transactions are maximally secure for the buyer and have higher payouts than most other xxx platforms for the seller (payouts now are usually 90-100% PLUS royalties). This trend has the potential to fade or it will be our future as credit card companies like Visa and Mastercard continue to pull their support of sex workers.

Tips for making money with NFT’s

  • First of all- you miss every shot you don’t take. Some of the companies I did NFT’s with were very new and inexperienced. I was a little hesitant to jump on board, but when it came down to it what did I have to lose? I made at least a couple hundred dollars with most companies I worked with (and up to 2k on the high end), using photos I already had on my computer. Reach out to companies you are interested in working with even if you don’t have a huge following. Enthusiasm goes a long way!
  • Get creative! You can tie physical and digital items to your NFT. In the vanilla world musicians have done this by including backstage passes in their NFT’s. What would your fans find extra special? Maybe the panties worn in the NFT, a painting, a skype session? These items make the NFT more tangible. You can utilize the traffic of the marketplace to sell panties and video chat in this way.
  • Ask about royalties. One cool thing about NFT’s is they can be traded like baseball cards. A good company will set up the transactions so every time your card is re-sold you get a percentage of the sale (usually between 2 and 10%).
  • Start a wallet. If you haven’t already, start a wallet and get payments and royalties sent there in bitcoin (or your preferred crypto currency). Cash out immediately unless you want to invest… the value of the currency could go down (it could go up too). This is the safest way I have found to accept payments.
  • Try XXX platforms first. Many NFT marketplaces allow adult content. That being said, you may find xxx NFT’s don’t sell as well on mainstream platforms. You may even be met with some discrimination. NFT rockstar crypt0natrix has spoken out a lot about the lack of inclusivity (especially towards xxx artists) in the industry. She has also made a stack of cash selling NFT’s on mainstream platforms though. There are plenty of marketplaces dedicated to or focused on xxx NFT’s.
  • Know the rules and be patient. Many of the adult NFT platforms and coins are groups of people just dipping their feet into XXX. They know about crypto, developed a coin, but unless they were previously working in the adult industry they probably have no idea how to work with models.  I have decided to be patient and give each company a chance, and educate them as much as I can throughout the experience. If it’s a total shitshow I just tell them we are not a good fit and move on. Be VERY clear about everything you agree on. The level of nudity, deadlines, royalties, payments, etc.

Remember that PayPal and Cash App are not safe methods of payment (tell them why if they don’t know), and encourage companies to verify age and identity (this is super important as models have had their images used and profited upon without their permission). None of the companies I have worked for have required me to verify my age or identity. If they do ask (which really they should) make sure you do your research and be careful about who you give personal information to. Be vocal about receiving your sales information if they do not provide this automatically. Some of these less experienced groups might turn into something really cool if they are educated and receptive to our input. If you get the opportunity don’t be shy to tell them how we want to be treated.

Personal Connection Increases the Value of Porn Sold as an NFT

Basically XXX NFT’s are porn the way porn should be…. People buy it because they like it and appreciate it. Yes you can illegally download it but when you buy an NFT you know you are supporting the artist AND you are getting a piece specially registered to you. This connection between artist and buyer is what creates the magic in NFT’s. Discreet peer to peer transactions where companies aren’t taking a quarter of each transaction to host you- It’s what everyone really wants.
