Adult Performers and Social Media

As an adult performer, we are just like any business owner. The importance of networking on social media is usually drilled into our head as one of the basics of being successful with our business. This has led to lengthy articles and discussions on how to get the most out of the various social media networks available, including which social media networks to use in the first place and why.

Lately, a lot of buzz has been discussed regarding what will happen should various social media networks begin to remove adult performers from their networks and what adult performers will do as a result.

Social Media for Marketing

In my experience, I find that many adult performers view social media as a critical tool for marketing. That is, the thought that it is important to be on social media to market as an adult performer.

Marketing includes such things as:

  • Clips Produced (increasing sales)
  • Cam Schedule (increasing member count and thus money earned during the cam session)
  • Current Promotions (increasing sales)

Social Media for Maintaining and Acquiring Customers

Besides marketing, another main focus of using social media for many adult performers seems to be to:

  • Maintaining current customers
  • Acquiring more customers

Maintaining and acquiring new customers is of particular importance to our business as adult performers, as to continue a stream of steady income as well as to, hopefully, increase income overall.

Social Media Effectiveness

This, of course, begs the question of if social media is actually effective at any of the above mentioned items, such as:

  • Does social media maintain income?
  • Does social media increase income?
  • Does social media increase customer count?
  • Does social media maintain current customers?

Of course, results vary from performer to performer.

Many arguments state that, because social media is free and it * may * lead to increased business, it therefore makes sense to be on it. But… does it?

Social Media Time Management

One of the biggest challenges many adult performers face is how much time is spent on social media.

Ask yourself; “Does the time spent on social media actually equate to meaningful, increased and maintained customers and sales on a regular basis?”

For many of us, the answer is no. There are exceptions to this, of course, but in my experience (personally and with working with others), the answer is no.

Social media poses many time-sync temptations, such as:

  • Responding to, reading and/or participating in drama
  • Scrolling through the feed too long
  • Responding to and/or reading time waster’s messages
  • Posting too often
  • Checking out what other performers are up to
  • The list goes on

One of the biggest challenges with social media, therefore, seems to be setting a hard limit on how much time is spent on there to ensure too much time has not been lost.

Best Uses of Time

In my opinion, many adult performers could really benefit from spending less time on social media. This is especially  true with the latest discussions about when or if social media networks will remove adult performers from their platforms. Instead of getting lost in this negativity, I propose an alternative viewpoint. That is, use this as an opportunity to evolve away from spending so much time on social media.

I strongly feel that the work time of adult performers is much better spent on things such as:

  • Creating Clips
  • Being on cam
  • Turning on phone / texting lines

Spend more time engaging with paid services or things that will make you money.

Please Remember: Spending more time on creating clips, camming and/or phone/texting should increase your overall income. Most paying customers also come from cam, clip and phone sites – not social media.

Social Media Conclusion

Ultimately, social media can be a powerful marketing tool when used correctly. However, it should never be replaced with the core work that encompasses online adult performers and this includes time. Most of us are doing adult work as our job to make money and thus we should spend most of our work time engaging in ways that directly make us money and/or has the highest chance of making us money.

In other words, spend less time on social media and more time on your sites. 🙂
